Ag Ed on the Move
Thanks to Missouri Farmers Care, our class was able to learn about soil layers, soybeans, corn, and livestock through Ag Ed on the Move. Each student was given a baggie and a folder with all the materials to complete the four lessons and activities. Students watched a video where they first learned about the item, and then the video walked them through the activity.
For the soil layers, students had an edible activity that talked about the different layers of our soil and why each one is important. It also talked about how farmers have to use rotational grazing and crop rotation to help our soil. Many students realized that their farming family members do this and were planting or moving cattle at the time we completed the activity.
The livestock lesson was also an edible activity where students learned how and why farmers use feed rations with their livestock. Then they made their own feed ration and learned about the nutritional content.
For the soybean lesson, students learned about the lifecycle of a soybean and what soybeans are used for. The activity provided a soybean for them to grow. The corn lesson taught about the corn stalk and what all corn is used for.
The activity allowed students to make plastic from cornstarch, vegetable oil, water, and a microwave. I personally loved how each lesson emphasized how important farmers are and how they are always doing what is best for their livestock and the land they have.
