Non-Fiction Text Features

Mrs. Whitworth's FABulous 5th graders have been learning how to identify features in non-fiction text to help give them a better understanding of their reading. Text-features include bold words, sidebars, diagrams, captions, charts, etc. After discussing what the different features are and what they mean, the kids worked with a partner in sorting and matching the features with their meaning to reinforce what they learned. Then, they looked through non-fiction books to identify the different features and presented their findings to the class. They discovered their understanding of the text increased in the books with more features. The final step was to apply their knowledge independently in answering questions using a variety of non-fiction articles.
