Putnam County FFA Members Attend National FFA Convention
On Tuesday, October 26th, four Putnam County FFA members, along with advisor Mr. Morris left on a charter bus with several other FFA chapters to attend the 94th annual National FFA Convention. This is the largest youth convention in America and is attended by 60,000 members and guests. Those FFA members attending were: Vanessa B, Sofia V, Dylan H, and Cora H.
The first activity the group did on Wednesday, October 27, was a tour of the Claiborne Farms in Paris, Kentucky. Claiborne Farms is a thoroughbred horse breeding operation near Paris, Kentucky. It was established in 1910 by Arthur B. Hancock. This farm has been the home of many famous racehorses and specializes in the breeding of racing mares for clients. The triple crown winner, Secretariat, is buried here. The next activity on Wednesday was a tour of the Louisville Slugger Museum and factory. This is where the Louisville Slugger ball bats are made for both amateurs and professional ballplayers. This company has been producing ball bats for 135 years. After the Louisville Slugger tour, the group traveled to Indianapolis Indiana to attend the Brett Young concert that evening.
On Thursday, October 28, the opening FFA convention session was attended, and following the session our FFA members attended the huge FFA career show and expo. Here the students got to view hundreds of exhibits from many businesses and colleges from around the country. In the afternoon, our Putnam County FFA members attended a national leadership workshop. The conclusion of the Thursday activities was a Hypnotist show. It featured several FFA members and advisors from all over doing funny things after being hypnotized.
On Friday, October 29, the group re-visited the FFA career and then toured Eiteljorg Indian art museum. This museum featured many impressive pieces of western and Indian-themed paintings and sculptures. We also toured the NCAA museum and the hall of champions. Here the students learned about the history of the NCAA and learned about many NCAA sports that college athletes participated in. The group concluded the Friday events by attending the National FFA Talent show and convention session. At the session, our FFA members got to hear the retiring address from the National FFA Central Region Vice President from Missouri, Paxton Dahmer.
The final day of our trip was Saturday, October 30, 2021. Early that morning we attended the American Degree session and watched several FFA members receive their American FFA Degree. Two Putnam County FFA members, Lainie Cowan and Tony Bondy received their degrees but were unable to attend. After that session, our group departed Indianapolis and headed home.
