Season of Giving
I have been fortunate enough to be able to be a volunteer for Operation Christmas Child. In a nutshell, Operation Christmas Child is a religious-based organization that ships and distributes shoeboxes filled with essentials and toys for children all over the world. The boxes my family and church family helped sort through this year are set to travel to Columbia, South America.
My families are just some of the hundreds of volunteers who sort through hundreds of thousands of shoeboxes every year.
The shoeboxes, once packed, are sent to distribution centers to be sorted and sent off to their destination country. At the centers, the volunteers take the boxes, open them to check for items such as money or liquids that are removed from the boxes. The shoeboxes are then repacked and other items may be added to fill up the box completely. The boxes are then taped, sorted (My Job), and scanned. Then once a packing box is filled it is placed on a conveyor belt (My Job). The filled shipping boxes are then placed into shipping containers to be taken to the destination country.
After a long four hour shift, we try to have as much fun as possible. When we traveled to Minnesota, we visited the Mall of America. Last year, we traveled to Chicago and visited Sears Tower. However, because of COVID this year, the majority of our time was spent at the hotel.
This opportunity to volunteer is something that I look forward to every year. This holiday season, please don’t forget to volunteer your time to those in need. Especially in this time of uncertainty. #2020.
