This nightly assignment helps your child/children with fluency and comprehension. It also provides time to be one-on-one with your child/children.
This is something I found on Presenting Reading to a Child: "Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered as a precious gift. Reading to children even before they can understand words, teaches them to associate books with love and affection."
