What will you take to survive?
Sixth-Grade students have started the new quarter reading a novel by the late Gary Paulsen. The novel that we are starting this quarter is called Hatchet. Students were asked to make a list of ten things that they would take with them if they knew that they would be alone in the wilderness. Those ten things are what they had to use to survive out in the wilderness alone. Then they were asked to take that list of ten down to one. Students then were put with a partner and discussed if their choice of survival tool would work and what one they would choose together. Students came up with a variety of answers such as; freeze-dried food, knife, an ax, a gun, water, fire starter, and a side-by-side. We then discussed whether or not these items would actually help them survive in the wilderness or not. If not, then we discussed what would be the best to help you to survive in the wilderness.
