Internet Safety Reminder: BE VIGILANT!

As the internet and social media appear to be a part of daily life for most adults and for many adolescents, it is of the utmost importance that necessary precautions are taken to ensure safety. There have been many “challenges” going around that are dangerous for students.  There is a particular "challenge" in the news right now. However, it is not the first, nor will it be the last. Please remember to be vigilant where the internet, video games, and social media are concerned. Supervise the video games your children play and the videos they watch online.  The recent challenge appears in videos that would appear to be child-friendly. Remind your children not to communicate with anyone they do not know online. They should NEVER give out personal information. Also, remind them that no stranger has the right to tell them to or “make” them do anything they do not want to do.

These issues are addressed in the school setting.  Students in grades 5-12 are provided with internet safety training each year.  A cyber crimes detective provides this training. Elementary students also discuss internet and social media safety in elementary guidance classes.  However, students need to be reminded constantly and parents/guardians need to be aware and supervise students vigilantly.
