Red Ribbon Week
The Putnam County R-I Schools will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week October 22-26, 2018. Students in the elementary will be doing a variety of lessons and activities to promote healthy choices. For those who don't know why we celebrate Red Ribbon Week, here is a little history behind the national campaign.
In 1985, a brave drug enforcement officer named Agent Enrique Camarena gave his life to save people from the dangers of drugs. This officer was very well respected and people in his community wanted to support his life's work and honor him. Communities began to realize that standing up against drugs was important and teaching children about the dangers were equally as important. The National Family Partnership, with the help of First Lady, Mrs. Nancy Reagan founded the National Red Ribbon Week in 1988. Each time a person pinned on a red ribbon or tied a red ribbon around a school fence, they told the world they were saying "NO!" to drugs and honoring the brave drug enforcement officer to which this movement began. This is a great opportunity to discuss the importance at home and school, why living a healthy life and making good choices is so important.
