The Area III FFA Proficiency Awards selections were held Feb. 18th, 2015 in Kirksville. Eleven members of the Putnam County FFA submitted 11 applications to be judged against other applicants from the Area III FFA Association.  There are 50 proficiency award areas in which students can apply.  Proficiency awards are based on each student’s Supervised Agriculture Experience Program (SAEP).   SAE programs are the student’s project or job outside of the school setting.  SAE programs are either placement (working for someone), or entrepreneurship in nature.  The applications and the student’s record book are reviewed by area agriculture instructors and placed accordingly after being scored.

The following FFA members from Putnam County placed first and will advance to state competition:  Katelyn Gillum, 1st in Food Science Placement; Megan Tolias, 1st in Food Service Placement; and Tanner Bondy, 1st in Agricultural Mechanics Repair and Maintenance Entrepreneurship.

Other FFA members with applications that competed and placed were:  Haley Ballanger, 5th in Beef Cattle Production Entrepreneurship;  Sara Webb, 2nd in Sheep Production Entrepreneurship; Jacob Helbing, 4th in Wildlife Management Placement; Josh Vestal 3rd in Agriculture Fabrication and Design Placement; Riley Wood, 3rd in Agricultural Sales Placement; Matthieu Myers, 2nd in Grain Production Entrepreneurship; Justin Daniels, 3rd in Forage Production Placement; and Kyle Blanchard, 3rd in Goat Production Entrepreneurship.  The three area winning applications will be sent to state for further review by a state committee.  They will attend the State FFA Convention in April, where a state winner will be announced, and will also receive a plaque at state convention for their accomplishment.
