A Gift That Anyone Can Give

Guest Readers

Reading aloud. It is a gift that anyone can give. This can mean reading aloud to a child before he can read on his own or once a child can read alone, continuing to read aloud to build his vocabulary and excitement about books. It doesn't always need to be the parent doing the read aloud. Guest readers add another fun element to the read-aloud experience. Hearing other adults read aloud exposes your child to various reading styles and many new books. There are many ways to take advantage of guest reading opportunities such as attending story hours at libraries and bookstores, leaving books for babysitters to read to your children, and asking relatives to join in. You can be a guest reader also. Ask your child's teacher if you can read to the whole class. (First, make sure your background check is on file with the school.) This small gesture will help your child make the connection between reading at school and reading at home. Remember...reading aloud is a gift that anyone can give.
