Rotary Hosts Young Writers
Fifth Graders Share Their American Heroes Essays
Unionville Rotary enjoyed an exceptional program on December 5th as part of a Literacy Trifecta effort in our community. A boy and a girl from each fifth-grade class joined Rotary for lunch and read aloud their essays on American heroes. Written as an assignment for the Veterans Day Celebration, each student’s work was unique. It was heartwarming to note how closely these young people are observing the actions of adults. Characters are being formed by relatives and others who have demonstrated what it takes to be an outstanding human being. Their subjects ranged from a kind, caring uncle, an admired great grandfather and WWII veteran, a respected father and state trooper to a professional football player who chose the military after 9-11. Reading aloud in front of a crowd of strangers can be daunting, but this foursome did a great job.
Thank you to Principal Donna Altiser for bringing Delaney L., Reagan S., Brayten S., and Hayden C. to share their writing skills with Rotary. We were also glad that Dr. Halley took time out of his day to hear the kids read. We appreciate the hard work of Mrs. Diane McClain, Guidance Counselor at PCR-I Elementary, who steer-heads the project in her 5th-grade guidance classes and helps the students put together their American Hero essays. Thank you to the fifth-grade teachers as well, Mrs. Gayla Whitworth and Mrs. Angie O’Reilly, for creating a love for patriotism in our students. What a wonderful way to stimulate the writing process and a better appreciation of the heroes around us.
