Here are some tips for parents to use with young readers:
- Bring a book or magazine along anytime your child has to wait, like at a doctor's office.
- Encourage your child to reread their favorite books.
- Ask your child questions about a book they just read.
- Be Patient-give your child time to decode a word before telling them the word.
- Encourage reading as a free time activity.
- Play word games-Have your child sound out a word as you change it from mat to fat to sat.
- Take turns reading.
- Have your child help make lists, write thank-you notes or keep a journal.
