S.O.A.R. FAMILIES SAY "THANK YOU" TO THE COMMUNITY

Putnam County Board Member, Mr. Kelly Busker, works on Great Egg Drop activity.

Before and afterschool families came together Tuesday evening to say “thank you” to everyone that makes a difference in the lives of their children and their family through involvement with the Putnam County S.O.A.R. Before and Afterschool Program.

The evening opened with dinner and continued with a presentation to Mrs. Barbie Swiger who has served on the program’s Advisory Council over the past five years.  Mrs. Swiger has donated a great deal of time and effort to the program and will be moving from the community in the near future.  Students made her a small token of their appreciation.

The evening continued with a skit entitled, “Caps for Sale,” presented by several of the afterschool children.  Attendees were then encouraged to work in family groups on a science activity.  The science activity, “The Great Egg Drop,” encouraged groups to collectively create a protective barrier for a raw egg so that it does not break when dropped from various heights.  The Heise family’s egg survived the “great fall” competition.

This activity is similar to many activities that are shared during the afterschool program each day.  The program focuses on mathematics, science and communication arts when planning “hands-on” activities to build enrichment and disguised-learning fun for all students involved in the program.
